Composting is a sustainable way to manage organic waste while producing a nutrient-rich soil amendment. For operators looking to sharpen their process, here are eight tips drawn from real facility work to improve efficiency and product quality.
1. Balance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio
A proper carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio is fundamental. Aim for roughly 25–40:1 at the start to promote microbial activity and speed decomposition. Monitor and adjust your ingredients regularly to keep the environment favorable for the microorganisms doing the work. These numbers are on the chemical level. 2. Manage moisture
Consistent moisture is vital for microbial activity. Start around 50–60% moisture content to give microbes the conditions they need. Keep the pile moist but never waterlogged. 3. Mind particle size
Shredding or chopping material increases the surface area available for microbial action and allows air to move through the pile, which accelerates and evens out decomposition. Consider equipment that breaks down larger material and produces a good range of particle sizes — aim for roughly 2 to 4-inch minus. Too small and air can't move through well. Too large and air just flows out without creating an insulating effect.
4. Provide adequate aeration
Oxygen drives the aerobic process. Build properly sized piles and turn them on a regular schedule to prevent anaerobic pockets, which cause odors. Understand how air flows through your pile, passively or actively (forced air). Invest in quality turning equipment to mix and fluff the material efficiently. Turning aerates it momentarily, the key is to have the right structure built through your recipe so air can flow well passively. If you run a forced-aeration system, keep it maintained and calibrated so you're actually delivering the aeration rates you designed for.
5. Control temperature
Composting generates heat as microbes break down organic matter. Monitor the internal pile temperature regularly, aiming for 130–160°F to ensure pathogen destruction and keep the process moving. Use proper temperature probes and keep them calibrated; checking them against an ice-water bath (a slurry that holds at 32°F) is a simple field method. Determine your protocols for regular turning and what to do when temperatures reach certain highs or lows.
6. Test and control quality
Run regular quality-control checks on finished compost — nutrient levels, C:N, moisture, and overall stability — so you know the product is ready for use. Look into the Seal of Testing Approval (STA) program managed by the US Composting Council.
7. Keep records
A lot happens at a composting operation, and conditions change week to week. Write down not just what you plan to do but what you actually did and measured. Keep a field notebook for daily activities, volumes, mix recipes, water additions, temperatures, and special events. Keep a binder on site with summaries of your permits and approvals, incoming waste, outgoing product, temperatures, and quality control results. Good records save enormous time when you need to find something — and they make inspections far easier. They also help when you're trying to troubleshoot something that has effects weeks or months later. Composting doesn't happen overnight and your records can help you remember what was done when.
8. Have an operations plan
If you have a facility operations plan, make sure you and your staff know it. If you don't have one, create it. It doesn't need to be complicated, but it should address the applicable rules, regulations, and BMPs. Even if you're exempt from rules or permits, write your plan. Writing your methods down also makes training faster and more consistent as you turn organic resources into a valuable soil amendment.
